In her powerfully conceived project, Mapping the Body, Hobson strives to represent the locus of life experience in the body. These mixed media collages aim to shift the viewers focus away from the external shapes and textures of human form toward the internal experiential and emotional dimensions that exist under the skin.

The Robert Koch Gallery had a wide selection of contemporary collages by Mary Daniel Hobson, who is a respected Dora Maar scholar. Surrealist in feel, her collages usually center on self-portraits or portraits of friends to which she adds her handwork of and, often, natural materials such as dry leaves or petals.

Whether carefully examining one piece and dissecting it to its smaller elements, or stepping back to explore the collection as a whole, the viewer steps away from this exhibit with a new understanding of not only what defines a body, but also what gives it the ability to keep afloat; those things we can not shed, those things we carry heavy metal sandbags, and the things, like butterfly wings, that lift us to new, unexplored heights.
